Part 1
The recently – concluded festive season reminded me of Grihpravesh pujas, amongst other things. In my limited existence, I’ve been lucky to attend quite a few of them and host one. So, I thought I’ll write about this important puja today.
But, because there is so much to write, I have divided this blog post into five parts. Please read on for the first part.

What Is a Grihpravesh?
A Grihpravesh is a puja performed when one enters a new home for the first time. The literal translation of the term is ‘entering a new house’. It brings good fortune, happiness and prosperity. It creates positivism. It helps attract the blessings of the deities and nine planets.
A Grihpravesh purifies the environment. It eliminates evil spirits. It protects the house from all kinds of obstacles/ troubles, negative energies and unpleasant events. It removes the effects of a ‘buri nazar’.
Cultural Significance of a Grihpravesh

Grihpravesh has been a tradition for centuries. More than the ritual, it is the impact it has on the family and community as a whole.
- Family bonding: It brings the entire family together under one roof. It creates an atmosphere of joy and celebration. This strengthens relationships.
- Sense of community: It promotes a sense of belonging among family and friends. This brings people closer during significant life milestones.
- Spiritual well-being: It is effective from an individual’s spiritual development aspect. Chanting prayers and lighting lamps create a sense of peace and purpose in one’s life.
When To Conduct a Grihpravesh?
Hindus are particular about Shubh Muhurta (auspicious date & time) for important tasks. The same goes for buying a property/ moving to a new house. Entering a home during a Shubh Muhurta makes life easy. The family will experience least struggle after moving into the new house.

So, a Grihpravesh is conducted on a Shubh Muhurta. It is chosen based on several factors including astrological charts. One consults a priest to find the auspicious date and time.
People are often confused if they should conduct a Grihpravesh for a rented house. One should do this ritual even for a rented house. It wards off any negative energy and brings in positivism. This ensures a peaceful and prosperous living.
How Many Times Can One Do a Grihpravesh?
One can carry out a Grihpravesh multiple times in one’s lifetime. It is performed only once when entering a new house for the first time. It can be conducted if the house has been vacant for a long time. It is also done if one is re-entering the house after renovation or reconstruction.
