15 February, the world over, is observed as Singles Awareness Day for single people to celebrate. I’m sure there are quite a few out there who either actively dislike Valentine’s Day or don’t understand the hype about it.

Over the years, I’ve become less vocal about my own relationship with Valentine’s Day. But Singles Awareness Day is the sort of day I enjoy & want to write about this year. That’s because it embodies what I love doing on every ‘single’ day of the year, i.e., to treat myself!

Here are a few things that make me happier when I’m alone.

I Dress Up

I’m a casual dresser but, once in a while, I feel good about dressing up. There have been days when I’ve draped a sari & N has given me a look as if to ask, “Is it Diwali today?” Ignore! I put on anything I want to wear & that’s fun.

I Get Chocolates/ Flowers

Who dislikes chocolates/ flowers? So, then, why not get myself some of either/ both? Earlier, I would order my favourite chocolates but now, I prefer to go to the florist & get flowers for myself (& my home).

I Go Shopping

I can’t shop in company. I have to, have to shop alone. I’m my biggest approver & my biggest critic. So, nobody else will do; it’s to be I, me, myself!

I Have a Massage Day

Having a massage is relaxing. With Urban Company offering this service at home, getting a massage has become more convenient.

At times, I extend this self-pampering to include applying a face mask, soaking my feet, using a jade roller, & believe it or not, combing my hair leisurely.

I Listen to Music

I put songs on YouTube on auto play mode & usually do a jig around the house!

I (Try To) Meditate

Now this is a habit I’ve been trying to develop but still struggling with. However, when I do manage to do it, I find it oh-so-relaxing.

I Practice Gratitude

This has helped me look at life positively. The more I reflect on the positive things, I realise the more contented & optimistic I’ve become.

I Take Myself on a Date

If I want to do something, I don’t wait for someone to do it with me! I take myself to a meal or a movie, whatever catches my fancy! I know a few people who find it awkward to go to movies/ restaurants alone, that they’ll be judged for coming alone, but my personal experience is (a) it’s liberating, & (b) nobody gives a damn TBH!

I Try Something New

Now I’m not somebody who steps out of my comfort zone easily but in that limited space, I do try to do something new. It can be a new cake recipe or sightseeing an unseen place.

I Walk

Walking makes me happy. I’m a habitual walker but if I’m in a particularly foul mood, a nice walk boosts my mood.

I Watch the Sunset

Sunset is the time I walk Fluffy. It’s a beautiful way to finish off a day.
