Today, India lost Rishi Kapoor, an actor. Yesterday, the country lost Irfan Khan, another excellent actor. The two deaths, coming in the middle of a pandemic, have caused almost an outrage on social media. Outrage against 2020. The year 2020… yes, the year!

IMHO, that’s gross injustice to the year, specially when the tragedies are attributable to human beings themselves & partly to fate.

If humans continue to operate live animal markets, viruses & diseases will continue to occur.

If countries continue to hide real pictures, other nations will continue to suffer due to unpreparedness.

If people continue to defy government advisories & lock-downs, the pandemic will continue to spread.

If an ailment like cancer affects anyone, there will be a death probability.

If a helicopter flies, there will be a chance of it crashing.

If governments prioritize human lives, the economy will suffer. if economies suffer, there will be recessions, layoffs & pay cuts.

If, over the years, businesses have chosen to build personal wealth rather than creating security pools, livelihoods will be lost.

If the world continues to ignore climate change, natural calamities will continue to strike.

Out of these, which one is the fault of 2020? We have brought most of these situations upon ourselves. Each year has its ups & downs. There are celebrity deaths, natural disasters & terrorist attacks every year. The only additional bit in 2020 is the Wuhan Virus pandemic.

I, in fact, believe 2020 is a great year. A year that is teaching us a lot of lessons. Lessons that we had forgotten along the way. We are learning that nothing is more important than health. Learning which are the professions that truly matter. To check on our loved ones & catch up with friends. To live without luxuries. That it is possible to return to simple living. To loosen our purse strings for the those less fortunate. We are learning gratitude, kindness & selflessness.

So, 2020, I am sorry! &, thank you!!

It’s basically an attitude of positivity on the part of the writer ! Otherwise every year has got its good and bad . Yes, 2020 taught us much more than other years we have lived in our lifetime. Spanish Flu was the biggest disaster in recent memory, along with two world wars , India’s partition, terrorist attack on WTC ! But, unfortunately, we have got short memories! And it will happen this time also !

    1. Thank you for your kind words! I’m unsure how people manage to live with negativity. It’ll do good to all of us if we ‘hope’ for a better future than to curse the present.

The examples you quoted – all of them would have made the world come to a standstill but the show went on.

That’s the beauty of being human – resilience!
